Throughout its 100-year history, Fløibanen has been committed to safeguarding the community and the environment in which the enterprise is based. The Board of Directors and the management focus on fair and decent working conditions, and the staff endorse the enterprise’s social responsibility strategy through the values inclusive, engaged and hospitable. Fløibanen has a responsibility to make a positive contribution to the local community and it supports a number of sports clubs and charitable organisations throughout the year. A strong focus on keeping the environment around Fløibanen clean and well maintained is essential given the high number of visitors it receives. The Board makes requirements of itself and the management to ensure that it remains a sustainable means of transport to the intermediate stations and Mount Fløyen, while its focus on digital development simplifies the customer journey and makes it easier for users.
Natural environment – ISO 14001 certification in 2019
Our goal is to reduce our environmental impact, and we organise our infrastructure and systems to enable employees to show consideration for the environment. In autumn 2019, Fløibanen was certified pursuant to the ISO 1400 standard (International Environmental Standard). Fløibanen has also selected six of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, to which it will dedicate strategic efforts going forward. We make environmental requirements of our suppliers in connection with procurements. We request certification, and we select and prefer suppliers who take environmental work seriously. Overall, the organisation has already made major changes to how the business is run, and we have set clear goals for safeguarding both the organisation and the natural environment. We shall help to make Bergen a greener city. We will do so by taking responsibility for the footprint we and all the visitors to Mount Fløyen leave behind. Sustainability shall permeate the Fløibanen culture.
Environmental goals 2020
Fløibanen updates its environmental goals every year and attempts, as far as possible, to set smart goals that are:

The following goals have been defined for 2020:
- Increase the range of gift and utility items for sale in the shop from Scandinavian producers to 35% by 31 December 2020.
- Increase the percentage of suppliers who provide Norwegian-produced food and drinks to 80% by 31 December 2020.
- Keep up the focus on biodegradable products and suppliers with environmental certification. Ensure that at least 80% of containers and utensils used in connection with food sales (bowls, cutlery, cups etc.) are biodegradable by 31 December 2020.
Reduce unnecessary transport by suppliers and in connection with project work.
Maintain a 0.015-gram or lower limit for the amount of waste per embarking passenger.
Reduce paper consumption (brochures, copy paper and tickets) by 25% from 2019 to 2020.
Increase online tickets bought in Fløibanen app or at the website from 10% in 2019 until 25% in 2020.
Reduce total power consumption by 5% from 2019 to 2020.
By using the platform Motimate ensure that all employees are aware of Fløibanen’s environmental policy, significant environmental matters and how they can contribute to continuous improvement.
Today, Fløibanen consumes a minimum of power by using the counterweight principle on which the funicular is based, and it is a fossil-free means of transport.
